This solutionary meeting space at DTE is inspired by and named in recognition of the collaborative business and community development strategies, programs and policies emanating from my offices at Detroit Edison in the 1980’s and 90’s.
As you know, over the years countless of “solution focused” meetings have been convened in my offices on some of the most complex challenges facing our community; and remarkably many of those meetings resulted in some pretty amazing policies, programs and projects. Dubbed the “Idea Factory” by CEO, John Lobbia and senior executives, my old offices at Detroit Edison were considered a safe space to have difficult “no fault” discussions on sensitive challenges, always with the objective of resolution.
The innovative ideas discussed range from creation of low-income assistance and shut off protection programs to creation of pathways for Detroit residents to access skilled careers in electric distribution. Creation of complex manuscript insurance contracts for syndication underwriting at Lloyds, to creation of the framework for America’s first African American-owned overhead and underground electric distribution line clearance and construction company.
In appreciation and recognition of the commitment John had to “community-led problem solving” and my offices role in bringing that commitment to life through “win-win solutions” for the citizens of Detroit that DTE Energy has created “a safe space” for employees, non-profits and civic organizations to conduct meetings that solve challenges and develop innovative solutions: The Idea Factory.
